History of body surfing
Captain Cook observed natives of New Zealand, Australia and the Polynesian islands
body surfing and surfing waves (1728 - 1779). Kings were the only ones
allowed to (board) surf; body surfing was permitted for the
common people. The sport was later banned by
missionaries. Fortunately it has
survived in spite of them!
What is Body surfing?
Body surfing is a sport that uses your own body to ride the ocean waves! It is one
of the wave riding sports, a surfing related activity (like body boarding,
knee boarding, surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing sports). You
can "catch waves" (meaning ride the waves) on breaking
waves or ones that have already broken, called
white water. Done either close to
shore or farther out.
Requirements: Being a good swimmer! Finding the right kind of waves!
knowing how to avoid injuries! (Beginners start on deeper
than waist high, and in white water. Know that
powerful waves can tumble you and slam
your body hard on the bottom
(sometimes breaking a
back or neck!
Surfing terms: "tubing", riding inside a curling wave.
