Central California Board Surfing
Santa Cruz, California
Home of world famous 'Steamers Lane' - Wetsuit Surfing!
Steamer Lane ~ City of Santa Cruz
The world famous surf spot, here world championship events are held. A place
for the best of the best only! When the surf is happening the lane offers some
of the best surf in the world! A great place for spectators to watch surfing
most anytime, since only the best are usually brave enough for 'Steamers'.
Steamers is located West of Cowell's Beach, park along West Cliff Drive, near
the "Lighthouse" and "Surf Museum".
Cowell's ~ Near the Santa Cruz Boardwalk
A ledgenday long board spot, with gentle surf conditions. A great place to
learn to surf. People are generally civilized & polite in the usually crowded
waters. On West Cliff Drive, entry near Santa Cruz Wharf and the West Coast
Hotel parking lot.
Natural Bridges ~ City of Santa Cruz
During part of the year when conditions are perfect, they can be like Steamers
without the crowds! Watch the kelp!
Capitola Beach ~ 3 miles South of Santa Cruz
Another place that attracts beginners. Enter left of the rock jetty where
Capitola usually breaks. Good longboard waves. Less crowded than Cowell's,
although has fewer waves. Parking is difficult.
"The Hook" ~ Pleasure Point
Not for beginners! Locals are very protective of this spot and are not always
polite! Use your manners! Rates as having some of California's best surf
Located at the southern tip of a rocky shoreline called "Pleasure Point".
Entry down stairs at the end of 41st Avenue. On days with bigger surf a
shortboard works, but it is often long board surf.
30th and East Cliff
Beware! This is a spot for the Pros! No Beginners! An area for the "Pleasure
Point Surfing elite" only! Spectators will be treated to some of the finest
surfer anywhere in California.
Pleasure Point ~ East Cliff & 36th Ave
The stairs at 36th is the popular access point. Longboard waves provide a good
place for beginners on uncroweded days. Can get crazy on weekends!
Manresa State Beach ~ Aptos
Take Highway 1 to Aptos, exit 'Manresa State Beach'. Definitely not as crowded
asmany places in Santa Cruz County, but beware of rip tides. North swells can
get pretty awesome here during part of the year!
North Coast Highway ~ To Santa Cruz County Line
For the more adventurous, and skilled surfers. Avoid the crowds, catch some
awesome waves in many tucked away surfing spots off the highway. They are
not marked, with the exception of Waddell Creek State Beach and Scott Creek
Beach. Remember this is a remote region no life guards and a region known
as a Great White Shark breeding ground.
